The 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak is the most recent of it’s kind in the city that never sleeps. Nearly 100 people have been sickened. At least one person has died. Despite intervention efforts, more and more cases are added every day.
This outbreak is not over yet.
Cooling towers have been cited as the source of this outbreak. Exposing everyone walking the streets in this neighborhood.
What is Legionnaires’ disease and how do you know if you have it? How many people have fallen sick so far, and how have cases been tracked?
Here’s everything you need to know about the 2026 Upper East side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak so far!
As of July 18, 2026, there have been at least 72 confirmed Legionnaires’ disease cases added to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak table. At least nine people are still hospitalized (50 have been discharged and 12 were not hospitalized), and one person has died.

July 15 was the most recent diagnosis. However, that does not mean more cases aren’t coming. It can take up to two weeks for a sick person to begin experiencing symptoms and another two or more weeks for confirmatory testing to link the patient with an active outbreak.

So far, the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak appears to be centered around the Carnegie Hill and Yorkville neighborhoods. These include ZIP codes 10028, 10128, and 10075.
In such a densely populated area, these three zip codes span quite a few large residential buildings, offices, museums, businesses, and schools.

We have been closely following the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak since the initial July 2, 2026 New York City Health Department Announcement. As the investigation gathered more information, a picture came together.
Here’s what that timeline looked like:
On July 2, 2026, the New York Department of Health issued a press release announcing two confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease had been identified. These patients lived, worked, or visited the Upper East Side neighborhoods of Carnegie Hill and Yorkville with corresponding ZIP codes 10028 and 10128.
An alert went out to healthcare providers to prompt Legionella infection testing if patients presented symptoms consistent with this lung infection. The community was notified of the potential risks and told that “any New Yorkers who currently live or work in this area or people who have visited the area since late June and are experiencing flu-like symptoms, such as fever, cough, or difficulty breathing should contact a health care provider immediately.”
The Department also began sampling all cooling tower systems in the area and instructing building management to perform appropriate mitigation activities.
Initial illnesses were reported in the previously mentioned ZIP codes of 10028 and 10128. However, after a confirmed case was linked to the ZIP code 10075, that area and part of the Central Park perimeter from East 76th Street to East 97th Street was added to the potential exposure area.
At the time, there were 14 confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease connected to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak.
Around 160 cooling towers were registered in the potential exposure area. By July 6, 2026, 139 of those towers were sampled. In an effort to quickly contain and limit exposure, City Officials ordered buildings with cooling towers having preliminary positive screening results for Legionella bacteria to drain, clean, and disinfect their towers. Typically, this happens after culture results are returned. A confirmatory test that can take weeks to return.
Mayor Mamdani said in a statement:
“When there’s a public health threat, New Yorkers deserve urgency and transparency from their government.” He went on to say, “That’s why we’re using every tool available to protect people by moving quickly to identify potential sources of exposure, requiring immediate remediation and making sure New Yorkers have the information they need to keep themselves and their families safe. If you live work or recently visited the area and are experiencing symptoms like fever, cough or difficulty breathing, please contact a healthcare provider as soon as possible.”
Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Dr. Helen Arteaga added:
“New York City is aggressively identifying, cleaning, and disinfecting cooling towers that test positive for the presence of Legionella bacteria, and while our administration works to address this public health emergency, we urge everyone in the area, especially older adults and other vulnerable communities, to seek care if they develop symptoms.”
As of July 6, 2026, there were at least 23 people connected to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak.
By July 12, 2026, New York City Health’s Legionnaire’s disease page indicated 59 patients had been diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease. The updated data included 15 people hospitalized, 33 discharged, 11 not hospitalized, and no deaths were reported.
However, the Department explained that the published data was preliminary and subject to change and that the “diagnosed date” is different from the date symptoms began.
On July 13, 2026, the New York City Department of Health released an initial list of 31 cooling towers with preliminary positive test results (using PCR analysis) for Legionella bacteria. The City emphasized that this PCR screening tool detects the genetic material of both dead and live Legionella organisms and cannot conclusively prove the presence of viable (and infectable) germs in those cooling towers without confirmatory culture analysis.
By this time, 60 cases were connected to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak. At the time 15 people were currently hospitalized, 34 discharged, 11 not hospitalized, and no death were reported.
On July 14, 2026 the number of preliminary positive Legionella cooling towers was updated and a new list was released. This update stated that all 183 cooling towers in the affected area had been inspected. Now, the list included 76 addresses with cooling-tower systems testing positive.
At the time, 63 cases were connected to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak, 12 were currently hospitalized, 40 discharged, 11 did not require hospitalization, and no deaths were reported.
Shortly after the previous update, another was released. On this report, no new PCR-positive cooling towers were added to the list. However, the list did update the number of people connected to the outbreak.
At the time, 67 people were included in the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak, 12 were currently hospitalized, 43 were discharged, 12 were not hospitalized, and no deaths were reported.
The July 17, 2026 outbreak announced the first death connected to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak. To protect the privacy of the person and their family, the city did not release the person’s identity or additional personal information.
Cooling towers have been implicated since the beginning of the Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease cluster investigation.
But why?
There are a few clues outbreak investigators use to determine where to start when two or more people become sick in the same geographical area.
If sick people live, work, or have visited the same building, initial investigation begins with the water supply or a plumbing source.
When sick people have a connection to a wider geographical neighborhood (in this case different buildings in Upper East side neighborhoods), cooling towers are the starting point. This is because contaminated cooling towers spread Legionella bacteria outside the buildings and into public spaces, creating a wider exposure environment.
This prompted a quick canvas of the 183 cooling towers in the area. A feat taken by over 100 New York City employees. In all, 76 cooling towers tested positive for Legionella DNA. An indication of the presence of Legionella bacteria, but not an indication of whether the germs were alive or dead at the time of the analysis. A longer, confirmatory test that attempts to grow incubated culture on a growth medium determines if viable (and infectious) Legionella bacteria are present.
The results of those tests are still pending.
So, what exactly IS Legionnaires’ disease? We know it makes people sick. We know it has hospitalized many people and has claimed at least one life in this outbreak alone (and countless others in historical outbreaks in this city and beyond). But what is it?
What is Legionnaires’ disease?
Legionnaires’ diseased is a lung infection caused by a bacteria called Legionella. People become sick when they inhale the bacteria suspended in fine, aerosolized particles in the air. Such as the mist from cooling towers or other water fixtures like sinks, showers, decorative fountains, hot tubs, hot water tanks, and more!
Sometimes people get sick from plumbing fixtures or directly from the water supply. But most cases of Legionnaires’ disease are traced back to cooling towers. As is the case in this outbreak.
People who lived, worked, or visited ZIP codes 10028, 10128, and 10075 since late June 2026 should monitor themselves for symptoms.
Certain groups of people are at higher risk of severe illnesses. While most normally healthy people exposed to Legionella do not become ill, the following people are more likely to become sick if exposed, and experience more severe illness if infected:
Those without these risk factors may still become sick, so it is important to test anyone developing symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease for this potentially deadly infection.
Legionnaires’ disease can only be diagnosed through specialized laboratory tests. Since it presents as typical pneumonia (even indistinguishable from pneumonia on x-rays), this illness is often underdiagnosed.

Most people begin feeling sick between two and 14 days after exposure. However, it can take longer for symptoms to appear in some cases.
There are several testing options available for Legionnaires’ disease. Urinary antigen tests, lower respiratory molecular tests, and lower respiratory culture tests.
One of the more common Legionnaires’ disease diagnostic screening tools is the urinary antigen test. This rapid test, however, is limited. It can only detect certain serotypes of Legionella bacteria. It also does not produce a bacterial isolate that can be compared to the genetic makeup of an environmental source.
Another common screening method is PCR (or other molecular testing techniques). Several specimen types, including sputum, bronchoscopy specimens, tracheal aspirate, or other lower respiratory samples can be tested. These types of tests often detect Legionella serotypes missed in urine antigen tests.
A lower respiratory culture test is a more definitive test option. This laboratory test can detect a broader range of Legionella serotypes and generates a living bacterial isolate that can be compared to an environmental source. This is important in determining if the two samples are genetically related (via whole genome sequencing). While this test can provide valuable information, it does take time. A culture analysis can take up to 14 days to complete, requires specialized media, and space while the culture grows. It requires significantly more laboratory resources. But necessary for confirmatory testing.
Fortunately, Legionnaires’ disease is NOT contagious. Person-to-person transmission is extremely rare and has only occurred in very specific situations.
Most people become sick from exposure to aerosolized water sources or cooling towers.
In some rare cases, a few people have contracted Legionnaires’ disease from aspirating water contaminated with Legionella bacteria.
Legionnaires’ disease is very serious. One in 10 people with Legionnaires’ disease die from their illness.

When Legionnaires’ disease is contracted in a healthcare setting, this risk increases to 1 in 4!
While the number of people connected to the 2026 Upper East Side Legionnaires’ disease outbreak has slowed and mitigation efforts of impacted cooling towers in the area have been successful, we could still see additional cases of Legionnaires’ disease added to case counts.
Only confirmed cases are added to outbreak statistics. It can take up to two weeks for initial symptoms to appear and a little time later for a sick person to seek medical attention. Once a test is performed, it can take another few weeks for confirmatory results to be returned. Then a bit more time for that information to be reported to the local health authorities.
As a result, we could continue to see case counts rise for another month or so. Even if no new people are exposed to Legionnaires’ disease in this exposure event.
If you become sick with pneumonia or flu-like symptoms after visiting, staying, or working in the exposure area, you may have Legionnaires’ disease.
If you have become sick with pneumonia-like illness, seek medical attention immediately.
Legionnaires’ disease can be deadly. Do not wait!
