Fast Food meals as part of a high-fat diet are quick, easy, and tasty. Fast service (ideally), minimal clean-up (for the most part), and usually tasty (if they make your order correctly).
Obviously, we know that surviving on this type of diet exclusively isn’t healthy. But how bad is it? What are the effects of occasional consumption?
Australian scientists’ bit into this greasy topic to get to the bottom of the bag and find out.
If you enjoy your potatoes french fried, you may be disappointed with their findings.
I know I was. But I urge you to continue on. For all is not lost. There are ways to potentially reverse that damage.
According to study authors, “chronic inflammatory diseases are now accounting for more than 87% of deaths in high-income countries.”
That is significant!
High-fat diets have been associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, like coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.
We are literally eating ourselves to death!
While most studies on the topic are based on the long-term impacts of these conditions, the current study is the first of its kind to determine the early effects of high-fat meals on gut immune response and its ability to maintain its important barrier.
We know that long-term, a high-fat diet has risks and consequences. But what about the occasional high-fat meal? Is there are short-term impact?
Better understanding on how these processes work could shed light on preventative or prophylactic measures to help reduce these deaths.
The study, Acute Exposure to High-Fat Diet Impairs ILC3 Functions and Gut Homeostasis, fed mice one of two diets. A regular diet, and a high-fat diet.
Scientists also set up some experiments over the course of seven days, while others measured even more short-term effects over two days.
Mice fed a 36% high-fat diet for seven days were tested in one experiment. Certain immune response gene expressions were reduced, “suggesting that the intestinal homeostasis was rapidly compromised.”
Both ILC-3 and IL-22 were reduced. (ILC-3 maintains intestinal health and immunity, IL-22 reinforces the intestinal barrier).
Additionally, researchers measured the ileum and found that the lining was weakened.
When the high-fat diet was increased to 60%, significant gut permeability was observed, leaving the mice vulnerable to leaky gut and other inflammatory issues.
Overall, high fat diets compromised the intestinal barrier and impacted immune response in the small intestine.
According to Le Xiong, the first author on the paper, high-fat diets were a double hit to our gut barrier. They not only promoted inflammation, but also disabled the body’s ability to fight it.
Other aspects of the study examined changes in gut microbiota between mice fed a high-fat diet for seven days compared to those consuming a regular diet.
Species diversity also decreased in mice fed a high-fat diet.
Worse still, beneficial bacteria were reduced and harmful bacteria increased in number.
In addition to inflammation, consuming high-fat meals can impact our immune system. Making us more vulnerable to infection and illness. Another double whammy!
Mice fed high-fat meals showed reduced factors for intestinal health and immunity as well as factors that protect the gut barrier.
An interesting concept.
The impact is detectable before the physical signs can be observed. No significant changes in weight. No obvious changes in appearance. And no new illness observed.
Researchers indicate that “despite their gut protection capabilities being stripped away, the mice still looked healthy – highlighting how gut health can be compromised long before any visible symptoms appear.”
Who knew that fast-food fueled road trip could be causing serious damage to your gut. Even short-term.
Fortunately, these effects can be reversed.
Researchers were able to rebuild gut function and immune response by restoring IL-22 levels (responsible for maintaining the gut barrier and function).
While this may be administered as a therapeutic intervention, researchers offer a solution that can naturally boost those IL-22 levels. Fermented foods. High fiber foods. Foods that help keep the gut in line.
Overall, the researchers emphasize the importance of incorporating unsaturated fats and promoting better nutrition-based strategies for those at risk for chronic inflammatory diseases.
Eating more unsaturated fats, like nuts, seeds, and avocados.
Getting in more fermented foods with lactic acid bacteria. Things like miso, yogurt, soy sauce, sauerkraut, and kombucha.
Increasing your intake of fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Knowledge is power! Does knowing that even short-term consumption of high-fat meals can impact your body beyond the scale change your thoughts on food choices?
For me, it does.
As someone who already struggles with irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive problems, I try to eat anti-inflammatory foods and keep a fairly healthy diet. But, out of convenience (or just because sometimes those chicken nuggets call my name) cheat weekends happen. A few meals won’t hurt too bad as long as I drink enough kombucha and make sure I have fiber in there somewhere.
My justification is that if I only eat badly on the occasional weekend and clean it up the rest of the week, no harm is done.
As it turns out, that cheat weekend can, in fact, cause harm. A lot of harm.
Perhaps the cheat weekend will need to be amended to a cheat meal. For the good of my intestines.
