A recall for iceberg lettuce from Walmart has been initiated after it was connected to a multistate Cyclospora outbreak. Many other food service products have also been recalled and that process is currently underway.

But first, here’s what we know about the multistate Cyclospora outbreak so far!
So, how many people are linked to this Cyclospora outbreak?
According to the data collected from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA), as of July 16, 2026 a total of 1,644 people have been diagnosed with a Cyclospora infection after reporting exposure to Taco Bell. Of which, 94 people required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported at this time.
People began reporting illness as early as May 13, 2026, with the last report of illness onset on July 13, 2026. However, with a delayed recall and accounting for the time it takes a sample to be confirmed positive and be reported to the CDC (three weeks or more), we could see the number of people included in this outbreak continue to rise.
Five states have been included in this multistate outbreak. Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
According to the FDA, “the illnesses included in this outbreak are a subset of the Cyclospora illnesses identified nationwide.” The source of other Cyclospora outbreak clusters are still being traced.
The multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce from Walmart and other brands is not the only Cyclospora concern in the United States.
According to the CDC’s Surveillance of cyclosporiasis page’s as of July 13, 2026, the CDC has received reports of 1,645 “confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis” across 34 states since May 1, 2026. At least 141 people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
The agency also admits that more than 5,100 additional cases requiring further analysis have also been reported. Only cases with confirmed positive Cyclospora cultures have been included in these case counts. States reporting probable cases and those which are unreported are not included in these statistics.
Taylor Farms de Mexico of Guanajuato, Mexico traced potentially contaminated iceberg lettuce to a list of products sold in both food service applications and to the general public.
At least four Marketside brand products are included in the recall for iceberg lettuce from Walmart.

Affected products were distributed to Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Additional foodservice brands indicated as CV, JB, MARK, PK, SUB, SY, and TF are also noted.
If you have recalled iceberg lettuce from Walmart in your home, you may be wondering what you should do. The answer depends on whether you have consumed the product or not and if someone in your household begins experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms.
If the package is unopened, DO NOT CONSUME IT. Throw it away or return it to the place of purchase. It is a good idea to sanitize your refrigerator with an appropriate sanitation solution as well as anything that the package may have come into contact with.

If the package has been opened and someone in your household has consumed recalled iceberg lettuce from Walmart, they should monitor for symptoms. It is a good idea to retain the package for traceback investigation purposes, but be sure to package it up in another container and clearly mark it so it is not consumed again. Sanitize your refrigerator with an appropriate sanitation solution and anything that the package may have come into contact with. Wash your hands after handling the product.
If no one in the household experiences symptoms after three weeks, discard the container. If symptoms begin, seek medical attention right away or report your illness.
Cyclospora is a parasite that can infect humans. In fact, humans are the only known host for this harmful microorganism.
The most notable symptom involves watery diarrhea, with “frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements.” Most people with Cyclospora infections also report feeling very tired or more tired than usual.

It is possible for someone who is infected with Cyclospora to experience no symptoms at all. This is more common in areas where Cyclospora is endemic. It is important to note that a non-symptomatic person can still shed Cyclospora.
Due to the necessary life-cycle requirements of Cyclospora parasites, this infection is not contagious. These germs must undergo very specific conditions prior to being consumed before they become infectious again. Unsporulated oocysts released in a sick person’s feces (poop) require around seven to 15 days at a temperature of 73° F to 77° F for sporulation to occur. Once sporulated, the parasite becomes infectious again.
It is still a good idea to regularly sanitize the bathroom that a sick person is using. It is ALWAYS important for both sick people and those who are not sick to wash their hands. Wash your hands after you use the bathroom, after you help someone in the bathroom, or change a diaper. Be sure to wash your hands before you eat or prepare food for yourself or others. Wash your hands anytime you feel they may be dirty or contaminated. Just please. Wash. Your. Hands!

Cyclospora illness involves a lot of diarrhea. This primary symptom can cause serious dehydration, which can lead to additional complications. Drink plenty of fluids, replace electrolytes, and avoid caffeinated or sugary drinks.
Cyclospora illness can quickly go from bad to worse. Specialized treatment usually involves sulfa drugs like Bactrim or Septra. For those with a sulfa allergy, ciprofloxacin or nitazoxanide are often prescribed. Prompt treatment can improve outcome and reduce illness duration.
