Jalapeño Products Recall Announced in Response to Salmonella Outbreak

A jalapeño products recall impacting products made with the pepper has been announced in response to the multistate Salmonella spreading across the country. Several brands and large retailers make the list with jalapeño-containing products.

Let’s discuss this outbreak, what products to check your refrigerator for, and talk a bit about the signs and symptoms of this nasty illness.

Here’s what we know so far about the recent jalapeño products recall and Salmonella outbreak!

Salmonella Outbreak

According to the latest information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), at least 345 people have fallen sick with the outbreak strain. So far there have been 36 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported.

Based on patient information, the last date of illness onset was July 20, 2026, so it appears the outbreak is being contained. However, most Salmonella illnesses are mild enough they do not require medical attention and are therefore never included in outbreak statistics. Additionally, it can take six weeks or more for a case to be connected to an ongoing outbreak. So we should not let our guard down yet.

Sick people have been reported in the states of Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisianna, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Jalapeño Products Recall

A large jalapeño products recall announced by Coast Citrus Distributors generated several downstream recalls for products containing recalled Jalapeños.

Retailers like Hannaford, Kroger, Target, Trader Joes, Walmart, and Whole Foods Market. Foods like burritos, pico de gallo, guacamole, and salsa.

If you shop at these places and eat foods that might contain jalapeños, take a close look at the following list.

Whole Foods Market Prepared Foods Jalapeño Products Recall

Prepared Foods departments in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin are impacted by this jalapeño recall.

Taylor Fresh Foods Jalapeño Products Recall

Other retailers have jalapeño-containing products also subject to recall. Some under the Taylor brand, others with store brands. Check for your state and products in the following list.

Signs and Symptoms of Salmonella Infections

If you have consumed any of these recalled products and have recently experienced some gastrointestinal symptoms, you may have a Salmonella infection.

Symptoms of Salmonella infection can vary from mild to severe. If you have recently consumed jalapeños or something made with them, be on the lookout for common Salmonella symptoms.

These symptoms include:

• Diarrhea
• Fever
• Stomach cramps

Most people experience symptoms in as little as six hours and up to six days after exposure. In some cases, illness onset could be much longer.

Severity and length of illness often varies from person to person. Most people experience mild illnesses that pass quickly. Others may experience severe illness lasting weeks or even months after initial symptoms.

Most people, however, feel better within a week (four to seven days).

Some, however, may experience certain complications.

When this happens, bacteria may infect the urinary tract, blood, bones, joints, and even the nervous system.

How Bad Can Salmonella Get?

Reactive Arthritis

Reactive arthritis, a condition affecting the collagen in the joints, eyes, and urethra, is a common complication. This type of infection causes joint pain, irritation of the eyes, and pain during urination. Reactive arthritis symptoms may last for months or even years in some people.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is another common complication of Salmonella illness. In some cases, it can take quite some time before bowel habits return to normal.

Bacteremia

Bacteremia associated with Salmonella infections can affect many different tissues in the body. Resulting in a variety of infections.

Potential bacteremia infections include:

• Urinary tract infection – infection of the urinary system
• Meningitis – infection of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord
• Endocarditis – infection of the lining of the heart or valves
• Osteomyelitis – infection of the bones or bone marrow

What Should You Do If You Have Been Exposed to Salmonella in This Jalapeño Recall?

If you may have been exposed to Salmonella from jalapeños, there are a few things that you can do to help your situation.

Disinfect Your Kitchen

If you have purchased products containing potentially contaminated jalapeños, you should disinfect anything that they may have come in contact with.

Disinfect your counters and refrigerator to prevent further bacterial spread. Be sure to wash your hands afterward.

Seek Medical Attention or Report Your Illness

If you begin having symptoms consistent with a Salmonella infection, seek medical attention right away. If you are not sick enough to need medical care, it is still a good idea to report your illness to your local health department.
