Investigators have identified lettuce from Taco Bell as the source of this massive Cyclospora outbreak impacting thousands of people this summer. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has all but taken the lead on this multistate outbreak, as most of the illnesses appear to have come from that state. Other states that have been hard hit have also been traced to the same supplier.
How was the source finally uncovered and what does this mean for consumers? How do you know if you have Cyclospora and what should you do if you get sick?
Here’s what we know so far!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a total of 1,644 cases of Cyclospora connected to lettuce from Taco Bell across five states. Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Of which, 94 were hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Illnesses have been reported as early as May 13, 2026, with the last case reporting symptom onset July 13, 2026.
The CDC admits that this case count is different from reports across the country. For several reasons. Primarily because of how the CDC reports data, and that there appears to be multiple Cyclospora illness clusters not connected to this Cyclospora outbreak linked to lettuce from Taco Bell.
According to their press release:
“FDA is aware that the case counts in this advisory may not match what is being reported by individual states. State data may include both probable and confirmed cases, while CDC and FDA include confirmed cases only. State case counts may also include initial case reports that have not yet been reported to CDC. As cases are confirmed, these numbers will continue to update.”
Michigan alone has reported 4,312 illnesses as of July 16, 2026 and 102 hospitalizations. Other states have reported significant illnesses. It is unclear how many of New York’s over 600 cases, Ohio’s nearly 200, Kentucky’s 100, and West Virginia’s nearly 100 cases have been included in the national report.
Regardless of “reported statistics,” there are likely countless others who have not been tested and go unreported.
Cyclospora illness, are like other foodborne illnesses. They require specialized laboratory tests to diagnose. Not everyone who becomes sick experiences symptoms (more on that later), and not everyone goes to their healthcare provider. Many just ride out the symptoms and hope for the best.
News reports have been hinting at lettuce from Taco Bell as the potential source since the Mexican-style fast food chain began pulling that ingredient from their ingredient options. This proactive approach came from an early investigation looking into the common food item.
Many of the cases who reported eating at Taco Bell shared their food diaries with Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC. An ingredient level analysis was performed, revealing 90% of people interviewed reported eating iceberg lettuce.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) traceback investigation identified a single supplier of iceberg lettuce from Mexico that was use by Taco Bell locations where sick people ate prior to becoming ill.
In response to narrowing down the food source to iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell, the FDA can now perform sampling activities to confirm the source and how far back the contamination goes.
The FDA is working directly with the supplier to also determine if potentially contaminated iceberg lettuce remains in distribution or available for sale to the public.
The identified product comes from a supplier in Mexico. Fortunately, the FDA has jurisdiction for imported produce and other food items. As such, the FDA has increased screening at the border for products implicated in the outbreak.
Consumers should still consider choosing whole head lettuce instead of bagged salad or salad kits while recalls are being initiated. Iceberg lettuce has been implicated as the source of this outbreak, but cross-contamination at processing facilities may further spread these Cyclospora germs.
The most common symptom of a Cyclospora illness has been plastered across headlines. Resulting in an unofficial name for the outbreak. Given the moniker, “explosive diarrhea parasite,” it paints a vivid picture.
Watery diarrhea, with “frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements” is usually how someone knows there is a problem. Most people with Cyclospora infections also report feeling very tired or more tired than usual.

It is possible for someone who is infected with Cyclospora to experience no symptoms at all. This is more common in areas where Cyclospora is endemic. It is important to note that a non-symptomatic person can still shed Cyclospora.
