National S’mores Day is Toasted Fun For All

Posted in Food Safety,Our Blog on August 10, 2026

We all have core memories from childhood and one of mine happens to be making s’mores with my family and now I continue to do the same with my own kids. I feel like there are so many teaching moments and memories to be made around a camp fire. There is just something that can’t replace the feeling of the warmth of a fire, playing music, hearing the wood crackle and so many other things. The highlight of the camp fire is usually s’mores though. Who doesn’t love a nice toasty marshmallow, graham crackers and your favorite chocolate bar?

National S’mores Day Safety

We often think in some circumstances “what could go wrong” but even with the most simple things we have to be aware of the food safety measures to protect ourselves and people who are participating with us.

Prepare the Space

First you want to make sure that the area you are having the fire is safe and clean. It is recommended to not use an area that animals may be using as their restroom. A lot of people like to just use their grill, so again safety being first make sure that you are not using tons of fire starting measures as they can contain harmful chemicals that can make us sick. Here at my house we have a little brick fire pit that we use fire wood and little pieces of kindling wood to avoid any chemicals when starting the fire.

Safe Tools

You also want to make sure that your marshmallow roasting tool is safe. We like to buy the metal skewers with the safe handling ends to ensure that no ones hands get burned but there are also wooden skewers that if you soak in water before using they won’t catch on fire.

Indoor S’mores

For those who don’t have the opportunity to make s’mores outdoors know that you won’t be left out either. There are methods for the microwave, air fryer, oven and there are even tabletop s’more making devices that let you have this amazing treat no matter where you are.

Once you have your fire going, the right utensil for roasting you are well on your way, but what about the ingredients?

What’s In Your S’more Making Kit?

Many people are starting kits with their favorite s’more making supplies included. I love seeing the different ones online and have started to use this method ourselves to keep things covered and clean while having fun.

A simple charcuterie box can hold everything you need and want for the best classic or contemporary s’mores. We like to keep everything closed until time to use them to prevent any ash, bugs or little hands reaching in to contaminate our favorite snacks.

These containers also separate the ingredients into neat little sections that allow for easy selection of your s’more making experience. We like to use mini candy bars instead of the bigger ones. This keeps everything individually wrapped, safe to use and of course fun to pick out what combinations you want to make or try.

Do you like more traditional s’mores or think ore out of the box? We have seen recently that they can include fruit (strawberries are REALLY good like this), savory foods and of course different candy bar methods to create fun tasting experiences. Just remember if you are using fresh fruits to properly wash and dry them before adding to your line up.

Here at Make Food Safe we hope that all of your campfire experiences are amazing and filled with many memories with family and friends.
