The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, and Markets and Vermont Department of Health are investigating a Salmonella outbreak linked to Leaping Bear Farm eggs. The Agency indicates that in addition to the Vermont cases, other states have reported cases with the outbreak strain.
So, what Leaping Bear Farm eggs are impacted and how was this problem discovered? Could we see more illnesses related to this Salmonella outbreak?
Here’s what we know so far about the Salmonella outbreak linked to Leaping Bear Farm eggs.
According to Vermont Department of Health, at least 14 Salmonella illnesses have been linked to Leaping Bear Farm eggs.
The same strain of Salmonella Enteritidis found in environmental samples taken from the Leaping Bear farm in Windsor County were identified in patient samples.
While egg sales were limited to locations in Vermont, “other states also have genetically linked cases.” Suggesting consumers may have crossed state lines to visit Vermont Farmers Markets. However, the actual number of cases has not been made available.
States like New Hampshire have warned their citizens of the situation. For example, a New Hampshire Health and Human Services Instagram post said, “ALERT: Leaping Bear Farm of Reading, VT has issued a voluntary recall for chicken eggs, which may be contaminated with Salmonella.” According to the agency, “no product from this recall has been sold in New Hampshire.” They just happen to have a commutable border.
Environmental samples obtained from the Leaping Bear Farm in Windsor County tested positive for the germ. As did samples from eggs, which were sold at various farmer’s markets locally and other retail establishments in the area
Following these confirmation test results, Leaping Bear Farm agreed to voluntarily recall all eggs associated with the incident. According to the press release, “1800 hens have been impacted by this event.”
In cooperation with the Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets, Leaping Bear Farm is recalling certain cartons of chicken eggs.
How do you know if your eggs are being recalled?
Recalled product can be identified with labeled dates between June 1, 2026 and September 5, 2026. Cartons include the Leaping Bear Farm’s logo and labeled as Grade A Pasture Raised Organic Eggs.
Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food, & Markets is concerned that some products may still remain at retail locations or consumer’s homes. Especially with potentially contaminated eggs moving across state lines.
The agency explains that people with affected eggs should discard them (do not compost them) and sanitize anything that may have come into contact with them.
Leaping Bear Farm has agreed to not sell or distribute any chicken eggs until the Agency determines they are no longer a public health threat.
