The already huge multistate Cyclospora Outbreak has gotten even bigger. More states have been connected to the Cyclospora outbreak linked to Taco Bell lettuce distributed by Taylor Farms de Mexico. This inclusion has increased the number of connected cases in the already conservative Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) case counts.
State statistics are significantly higher, with Michigan reporting a significant portion of known Cyclospora illnesses.
So, how many people are included in this multistate Cyclospora outbreak? Is Taylor Farms still on the hook for these illnesses, despite controversial statements about the results of product sampling tests? Could we see additional recalls?
Here’s what we know so far about this multistate Cyclospora outbreak, how to know if you have it, and what you should do if you get sick!
With the addition of four more states, this multistate Cyclospora outbreak now includes illnesses from Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
The CDC has received confirmatory (culture-positive) results for 1,947 cases that have a connection to Taco Bell prior to becoming sick. There have been at least 98 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported so far.
People report becoming sick as early as June 22, 2026. The latest date of illness onset was July 20, 2026.
The CDC expects to continue seeing the number of confirmed case counts rise, despite the initial recall based on the requirements for determining if a sick person is part of the outbreak. Between the incubation period, the time it takes for a sick person to get tested, preliminary screening, and culture confirmation, “it can take as long as six weeks for CDC and state officials to determine if a sick person is part of this outbreak,” says the current outbreak press release.
A recent positive test result in a Taylor Farms product sample has created some confusing news surrounding this multistate Cyclospora outbreak.
Shortly after the announcement was made, the test was reviewed and determined to be a false positive. However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicates that this finding does not change the agency’s focus on Taylor Farms.
“On July 19, 2026, FDA provided an update about a false positive sample collected at the border. To clarify, this false-positive lab sample DOES NOT change the basis for FDA’s ongoing outbreak investigation or the overwhelming epidemiological data supporting the current voluntary recall by Taylor Farms. FDA’s traceback investigation and outbreak data continue to converge on shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms from growers in central Mexico. We encourage the public to continue to avoid all products listed in Taylor Farms’ voluntary recall.”
There are several other Cyclospora outbreaks that have not been connected to Taylor Farms distributed Taco Bell lettuce, so it is possible that other products may be contributing to the nationwide Cyclospora situation.
In fact, since May 1, 2026 the CDC has received reports of at least 4,173 laboratory-confirmed cades of cyclospora. The agency is still awaiting laboratory confirmation of another 7,400 plus cases for further investigation and analysis. While most cases have been reported by Michigan and Ohio, a total of 41 states have Cyclospora outbreak cases.
Given this information, other Taylor Farms products are not yet off the table. This nine state multistate Cyclospora outbreak is focused primarily on the connection to Taco Bell exposure.
Taylor Farms is a huge supplier of lettuce products to many other food businesses and private labels.
It is likely that we will see other recalls related to the overall multistate Cyclospora outbreak. Aside from the major brands that privately label these products under their own brand name, Taylor Farms also supplies lettuce to other restaurants besides Taco Bell.
The current list of these restaurant chains is not available. However, a 2014 report named Chipotle, KFC, Long John Silver’s, McDonald’s, Olive Garden, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster, Seasons 52, Subway, and Taco Bell as receiving distributed Taylor Farms lettuce products.
Illnesses involved in the lettuce products distributed to these restaurants will not have the same epidemiological link as the current Taco Bell-centered issue. However, as more information becomes available we could see the story develop and questions answered.
