Outbreaks & Recalls

Another Meadow View Jerseys Raw Milk Recall. This Time for Campylobacter.

Meadow View Jerseys raw milk dairy is the subject of another raw milk contamination concern. This Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture announcement comes just under a year from last year’s E. coli contamination announcement.

Here’s what we know so far about the Meadow View Jerseys raw milk recall and what to do if you have become sick.

State Officials Warn Consumers About Meadow View Jerseys Brand Raw Milk

According to reports, The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has asked those who have purchased Meadow View Jerseys brand raw milk since April 1, 2025 to stop drinking it immediately and discard the product.

According to the department, this raw milk product sold in parts of Southeastern and Southcentral Pennsylvania tested positive for harmful bacteria.

Campylobacter.

This type of bacteria, among others like Listeria, E. coli, and Salmonella, are a serious concern in raw milk.

What is Campylobacter?

Campylobacter is a type of bacteria that can cause serious intestinal illness. Animals, such as cows, usually show no signs of infection, but can spread their illness to humans through contamination. Particularly in raw milk, where no heat treatment is applied to kill harmful microbes.

This bad bug is responsible for an estimated 1.5 million illness in the United States each year.

How Do I Know If I Have a Campylobacter Infection?

Campylobacter infections initially present as intestinal illness. However, serious complications may develop.

If you have recently consumed Meadow View Jerseys brand raw milk, monitor yourself for Campylobacter symptoms.

Common Campylobacter symptoms include diarrhea (often bloody), fever, and stomach cramps. Some people with Campylobacter infections may also experience nausea and vomiting.

People usually begin feeling sick around two to five days after ingesting campylobacter bacteria or something contaminated with it.

While most people begin feeling better in about a week, some people may experience additional complications.

Higher Risk Groups for Campylobacter Infections from Meadow View Jerseys Raw Milk

Certain people with weakened immune systems such as those with AIDS, receiving chemotherapy, or people with a blood disorder may develop a life-threatening infection if it spreads to the bloodstream.

This happens when Campylobacter bacteria breach the small capillaries in the intestinal wall. From there, they can enter other parts of the body and cause systemic infection, resulting in severe illness.

Potential Complications from Campylobacter Infection

Certain complications, such as Guillain-Barré Syndrome, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and Reactive Arthritis can occur from Campylobacter infections from potentially contaminated products like Meadow View Jerseys brand raw milk.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Guillain-Barré syndrome is a type of paralysis experienced by around 3,000 to 6,000 people in the United States. While there are many different ways to cause this complication, Campylobacter infection is one of them.

Consuming contaminated raw milk is one way of getting this infection.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is the result of an autoimmune response to the body’s nerves.

It starts as a weakness and tingling sensation in the arms and upper body and can spread until muscles become paralyzed over the course of a few hours, days, or even weeks depending on the person.

Most people recover within a few weeks. However, others may take years to recover. Some may experience permanent nerve damage. Some people have even died from Guillain-Barré syndrome complications.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Irritable Bowel Disease is caused by environmental triggers, such as a Campylobacter bacterial infection.

This inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract often comes with symptoms such as persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding/bloody stools, weight loss, and fatigue.

Reactive Arthritis

Campylobacter infections can also cause a type of joint condition called reactive arthritis. This condition involves inflammation, pain, and swelling of the joints (knees, ankles, and feet). It can also affect the eyes and urethra.

Reactive arthritis symptoms may come and go. However, it can take up to a year or more to fully resolve in some cases.

Meadow View Jerseys Issues Recall Announcement on Social Media

In a Facebook post, Meadow View Jerseys announces that they have issued a recall and their cease production order by state health officials.

“As most of you probably already know we have done a recall on our raw milk and the state has required us to stop production. The state health department got a positive campylobactor test from a gallon of our milk. We have tested the milk ourselves and got a negative test but unfortunately it is not recognized by the state. We are currently going through testing to become recertified. We are still drinking the milk ourselves and haven’t had any issues. We will let you know as soon as we are up and running again. Thanks for your patience!”

Of course, a cease production and recall can be a financial burden on a small dairy farm. Frustration with the situation is understandable.

However, serious contamination concerns are not taken lightly by state health authorities.

Complicating matters further, is that even a small amount of contamination can cause serious illness. Depending on how samples are obtained, a single negative sample does not mean that there are no pathogens in a larger batch.

Unless the product is grossly contaminated and the bacteria are evenly distributed in a larger batch, a small sample may not contain enough bacteria to result in a positive test. For this reason, routine testing activities often include multiple samples.

Additional testing and monitoring over a period of time are necessary to clear the dairy to produce raw milk for public consumption.

Meadow View Jerseys 2024 E. coli Concerns

This is not the first contamination concern the dairy has encountered. Last year the same dairy experienced a similar contamination event.

In 2024, The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture issued a warning for consumers due to concerns about an E. coli contamination. A strain of bacteria that produces harmful Shiga toxins.

This problem was also discovered during routine sampling activities.

This recall involved products sold between August 5 and August 12, 2024
