Moringa Capsules Linked to New Salmonella Outbreak

Posted in Our Blog,Outbreaks & Recalls,Salmonella on May 27, 2026

Moringa capsules have been identified as the source of a recently announced U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak. The moringa leaf powder it contains is the potential contaminating factor. We have already seen moringa leaf supplements in the news this year. It seems the saga and tragedy continues.

While the FDA announced the outbreak investigation on May 20, 2026, Minnesota Department of Health was working behind the scenes when people in their jurisdiction began falling sick.

What do we know so far about this Salmonella outbreak? How was the problem discovered? What products are involved? How do you know if you have Salmonella and what should you do if you fall sick?

Here’s what we know so far about the moringa capsules Salmonella outbreak.

New Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Moringa Capsules

According to the FDA this Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak (assigned outbreak ID 1377) is separate from the previous outbreaks involving Salmonella Newport & Kentucky and Salmonella Typhimurium & Newport. Despite all three being linked to moringa powder. It does, however, bring attention to a contamination control risk associated with the raw ingredient.

The problem started when two people in Minnesota became sick with a Salmonella infection in April 2026 after consuming moringa capsules purchased on Amazon. Fortunately, neither person was hospitalized and both have recovered from their illness.

This launched a local investigation and the Federal partners were notified.

In all, 18 people have been linked to the Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak strain across 14 states. Including California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Massachussets, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Washington state. So far, 7 people have been hospitalized.

The last date of illness onset was reported on April 7, 2026. A recall can help reduce the risk of additional illnesses.

How Do You Know If You Have a Salmonella Infection?

If you have recently consumed moringa capsules, whether they involve these recalled products or others, and begin experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms, you may be a part of this outbreak. Only specialized laboratory tests can determine if your illness is part of this Salmonella outbreak. But it is a good idea to monitor yourself for symptoms and seek medical attention right away (especially if you are in a high-risk group) or report your illness to help with the outbreak investigation.

So, what are the symptoms associated with Salmonella?

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Stomach cramps

Most people experience symptoms in as little as six hours and up to six days after exposure. In some cases, illness onset could be much longer.

Severity and length of illness often varies from person to person. Most people experience mild illnesses that pass quickly. Others may experience severe illness lasting weeks or even months after initial symptoms.

Most people, however, feel better within a week (four to seven days).

Higher Risk Groups

Certain groups of people have conditions or susceptibilities that make them more likely to become sick if exposed, and experience more severe symptoms if infected.

Those more vulnerable to Salmonella infection include:

  • Children under 5 years of age
  • Infants (children under 12 months of age) that are not breast fed
  • People taking certain medications such as stomach acid reducers

Those more likely to experience sever symptoms include:

  • Infants
  • Older adults (65 years and older)
  • People with a weakened immune system

While most people do not need medical intervention and are not prescribed antibiotic treatment, those in the higher risk group are more likely to receive treatment.

In some cases, complications may arise from infection.

Salmonella Complications

Most of the time Salmonella bacteria are limited to the intestinal tract. However, in some cases, the bacteria can breach the intestinal wall and enter the bloodstream capillaries and veins found there. When this happens, bacteria may infect the urinary tract, blood, bones, joints, and even the nervous system.

Common Salmonella complications include reactive arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, and bacteremia that can affect other parts of the body.

Reactive Arthritis

Reactive arthritis, a condition affecting the collagen in the joints, eyes, and urethra, is a common complication. This type of infection causes joint pain, irritation of the eyes, and pain during urination. Reactive arthritis symptoms may last for months or even years in some people.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome is another common complication of Salmonella illness. In some cases, it can take quite some time before bowel habits return to normal.

Bacteremia

Bacteremia associated with Salmonella infections can affect many different tissues in the body. Resulting in a variety of infections.

Potential bacteremia infections include:

  • Urinary tract infection – infection of the urinary system
  • Meningitis – infection of the tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord
  • Endocarditis – infection of the lining of the heart or valves
  • Osteomyelitis – infection of the bones or bone marrow
