Metabolic Meals, a Home Delivery Meal Company, Is the Source of Multistate Salmonella Outbreak

Posted in Our Blog,Outbreaks & Recalls,Salmonella on September 10, 2025

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Metabolic Meals, a home delivery meal company, is the source of a multistate Salmonella outbreak that has sickened over a dozen people and hospitalized several.

Certain meals from Metabolic Meals have been implicated in this outbreak.

Here’s what we know so far.

Metabolic Meals Salmonella Outbreak Statistics

So far, there have been at least 16 confirmed cases of Salmonella infections across 10 states. Arkansas (1), California (3), Connecticut (1), Georgia (2), Illinois (1), Minnesota (2), Missouri (3), Texas (1), Washington (1), and Wisconsin (1). As of September 5, 2025 no deaths have been reported, but seven illnesses were serious enough to require hospitalization.

Most (56%) of the outbreak patients were female. Ages ranged from 0 to 96 years, with a median age of 56.

According to the CDC, the true number of cases is likely higher and may include additional states. This is, in part, because many people experience mild illnesses and never report it. When you combine that with the fact that it can take up to a month from initial diagnosis for an illness to be connected to an ongoing outbreak, it is a likely scenario.

Metabolic Meals Salmonella Outbreak Investigation

State and local health departments, in cooperation with the CDC and U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) have been actively investigating a multistate Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak.

People began falling sick as early as July 24, 2025. The last date of illness onset was on August 15, 2025.

As part of the traceback investigation process, state and local public health officials interviewed people to get an idea of a potential source. Of the 12 people available for interview, 10 (83%) reported eating a Metabolic Meals prepared menu item.

This led investigators to this company.

The investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, CDC and public health officials advice consumers to not eat affected Metabolic Meals products.

Salmonella Illness Symptoms

If you have recently become sick after eating affected menu items from Metabolic Meals home delivery, you may be wondering if your illness is involved in this Salmonella outbreak.

Only specialized laboratory tests can confirm Salmonella infections. However, certain symptoms are common for Salmonella infections.

Symptoms may include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, often beginning somewhere between 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Illness typically lasts around 4 to 7 days.

For most, medical intervention is not necessary. However, some people may experience complications requiring a trip to the doctor’s office. Some infections are so severe, sick patients require hospitalization.

Call a doctor if you have:

  • Bloody stools
  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102° F
  • Diarrhea that doesn’t improve after three days
  • Vomiting so severe it prevents you from keeping liquids down

Dehydration is a serious issue with illnesses involving diarrhea and vomiting.

Salmonella Infection Complications

Salmonella infections should be taken very seriously. Serious, life-threatening complications may develop.

  • Endocarditis: This is a type of infection affecting the lining of the heart and/or valves.
  • Meningitis: This is a type of infection affecting the tissues surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
  • Osteomyelitis: This type of infection affects the bones and/or bone marrow.
  • Reactive arthritis: This type of infection causes inflammation of the joints, eyes, reproductive organs, and/or urinary organs.

An additional complication has been discovered in this outbreak. The Salmonella infections identified in outbreak patient samples has a predicted resistance to certain antibiotic medications. This means, serious infections may require a different antibiotic choice, as the commonly administered nalidixic acide and ciprofloxacin are likely ineffective.
