A Texas Listeria recall has been initiated by Albertsons, Randalls, and Tom Thumb stores for tuna salad products. Other states with this recall notice include Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma.
Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators for recalled products and products containing this potentially tainted tuna salad.
Here’s what we know so far about the Texas Listeria recall and what to do if you become sick.
This recall was initiated following notice from a supplier that an ingredient used in their tuna salad products was recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
The breadcrumbs manufactured by Reser’s Fine Foods were used in several lots of tuna salad products sold at Albertsons, Randalls, and Tom Thumb stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.
So far, there have been no reports of illness, injuries, or adverse reactions from consuming these products. However, in some cases it can take as much as three or more weeks after consuming Listeria-contaminated food before initial symptoms begin.
From there, it can take another three or more weeks for an illness to be connected to a recall.
Recalled product was sold at Albertsons, Randalls, and Tom Thumb stores in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Listeria monocytogenes is the bacteria responsible for listeriosis. It causes a serious infection and is often associated with contaminated food.
While anyone can become infected with Listeria, most normally healthy people do not become seriously ill. There are certain groups, however, that are more at risk of becoming sick or experiencing more severe illness.

If you have consumed tuna salad products included in this Texas Listeria recall, there are certain symptoms to look out for in case you fall sick with Listeria.
Unlike other bacterial foodborne illnesses, Listeria affects people who are pregnant differently than those who are not pregnant.
Both groups of people may experience the same intestinal illness.
Common initial symptoms may include vomiting and diarrhea starting as little as a day from consuming something contaminated with Listeria bacteria. Though, it can take week or more for some people to show signs of invasive illness.
Listeria bacteria cause invasive illness when they leave the digestive system and enter other parts of the body. When it comes to invasive Listeria illness, we start to see differences in symptoms between those who are pregnant and those who are not.
For both categories, invasive illness symptoms usually begin about two weeks after exposure, but it can take longer.
While personal symptoms of invasive listeriosis are milder in pregnant people, the impact on the pregnancy poses potentially serious consequences. Someone who is pregnant and experiencing invasive listeriosis may have fever, fatigue, and muscle aches. However, listeriosis during pregnancy can lead to still birth, premature delivery, miscarriage, or life-threatening infection in the newborn.
Those who are not pregnant have a higher risk of serious illness or death. Invasive listeriosis in non-pregnant people often includes headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Some may also experience fever and/or muscle aches. This infection can be serious or even life-threatening. 1 in 20 nonpregnant people with invasive listeriosis will die from their illness.
People who are not pregnant often experience symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Fever and muscle aches are also possible symptoms. This type of illness can be serious and life-threatening. Most people with invasive listeriosis require medical treatment and often need hospitalization. 1 in 20 non-pregnant people with invasive listeriosis will die from their illness.
What you do with recalled products depends on whether or not you have consumed it or have become sick after eating it.
If you have recalled product and have not consumed it, throw it away immediately and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with these products.
If you have consumed recalled tuna salad products listed in this recall, but not have become sick, monitor yourself for Listeria infection symptoms. Seek medical attention if you begin feeling sick.
Bag up recalled product and clearly mark it so that no one in the household can consume it. It is a good idea to retain any leftover product and its packaging for traceback investigation purposes. Discard after you are sure you have not become sick after eating recalled product.
Sanitize any surfaces that may have come in contact with these products.
