If you have recently consumed TRE House Brand Magic Mushroom gummies, chocolate bars, or syrup and experienced an adverse reaction, you are not alone. The California Department of Public Health issued a Consumer Warning about these products because they contain “illegal and dangerous psychedelic compounds.”
While folks consuming these “psychedelic compounds” may have done so willingly for their intended purpose, these synthetic compounds are illegal in the state of California. Mostly due to the unpredictable nature and potential for serious complications and death associated with them. A risk factor that may not have been entirely understood.
This is where regulations come in.
In much the same way unregulated alcohol can cause methanol poisoning resulting in blindness, disability, and death. These compounds can cause long-term damage to the consumer.
What products are California Department of Public Health warning about? What’s in them that can cause the warned damage? What is Public Health doing about it and what should you do if you have had an adverse reaction to these products?
Here’s what we know so far about the TRE House Brand Magic Mushroom products Consumer Warning!
The California Department of Public Health issued a consumer warning for TRE house Brand Magic Mushroom products because they were found to contain the illegal and dangerous psychedelic tryptamine compounds 4-Acetoxy-DET (ethacetin) and 4-Acetoxy-DMT (synthetic psilocybin).
“These food products have the potential to cause severe adverse health effects, including hospitalization and even death,” said the Consumer Warning.
TRE House brand products of interest were labeled as containing a “Magic Mushroom Microdose Blend” and “Proprietary Nootropic Mushroom Blend.” However, laboratory testing revealed the presence of synthetic mushroom-based psychoactive drugs.
Public Health also warns of potential interactions with other medication and the danger it poses to children that may not understand that these aren’t “typical candies and syrup.”
This is another example of the growing concern involving “adult” products like psychedelic mushrooms, CBD, and THC products that look like candy or other seemingly normal food products. This can be especially dangerous in households with children, as they may not understand that the chocolate bar or gummy candy is not what it seems.
Each year, Poison Control centers are inundated with calls of pediatric accidental ingestion with these dangerous compounds. Even explicit labeling does not help when the unintended consumer is too young to read or understand what it means.
Recalled products in this case come in the form of gummies, chocolate bars, and syrup.
Several flavors of TRE House brand gummies, chocolate bars, and syrup have been analyzed. The following products tested positive and have been identified as “adulterated.”
These products include:
“This warning applies to all products regardless of lot numbers or date information on packaging.”
Affected products were sold to retailers (like smoke shops) and online. Product was distributed throughout California, and likely other states.
Symptoms of ethacetin and psilocybin exposure range from mild to severe. Common physical effects include nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, and lack of coordination.
Additional concerns include hallucinations and an inability to discern fantasy from reality. Some people may experience panic reactions and a psychotic-like episode. Especially with higher doses.
In addition to the public Consumer Warning, California Department of Public Health is working toward removing and destroying these illegal synthetic psychedelic products from the market.
The Department is investigating the brand owner, TRE House, at their location in Chatsworth, California. Their contract manufacturers are also being investigated.
More than 1,000 pounds of TRE House brand gummies were embargoed and subsequently voluntarily destroyed.
In addition to enforcement actions against TRE House, additional responsible parties may be subject to further enforcement action. Including, but not limited to civil or criminal penalties, “pending additional investigational work.”
The California Department of Public Health explains that consumers experiencing ill effects after consuming these products should seek medical attention.
The Department is also asking for help in identifying places where these products are sold.
“Anyone finding these products for sale should call the CDPH Complaint Hotline at (800) 495-3232 or submit an electronic report CDPH Food and Drug Branch.“
If you have been negatively impacted by consuming synthetic psychedelics from TRE House Brand Magic Mushroom gummies, chocolate bars, or syrup, you may have a legal case.
Products available on the market are expected to be free from adulteration, contain legal ingredients, and do not cause harm. Manufacturers, retailers, and other sellers should perform due diligence when selling products. Especially potentially dangerous products like “magic mushroom” foods.
Consumers trust these facts and make purchasing decisions accordingly.
When food manufacturers and sellers are negligent or deceptive, people can get sick. The consequences of which could be deadly.
