What’s In Your Kitchen – This Week in Food Recalls

Posted in Food Allergens,Food Policy,Food Safety on February 1, 2019

The government is open again. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t any food recalls in 2019! Here is the lowdown of the 2019 food recalls. MakeFoodSafe.com would like to help you keep your family safe from unsafe foods.  Each week we bring together a list of the current recalls.  Putting recalled lots, UPC codes, and contact information for recalled products in one convenient place helps you evaluate the foods you eat.

Some recalls are issued due to undeclared allergens, which could cause serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if someone sensitive to the product consumes it.  Other recalls are issued due to contamination with harmful material such as plastic or metal. Some are due to other health risks such as contamination with a pathogenic bacteria.  Check back often and evaluate your fridge, pantry, and shopping list to make sure you can identify which foods to avoid.

Mojave Foods Corporation Recalls Chile Pouches Due to Undeclared Allergen

Mojave Foods Corporation issued a recall on January 15, 2019 for their El Guapo Chile Habanero and Chile Pasilla-Ancho pouches due to the undeclared allergen, peanuts.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

Affected product was shipped to retail locations nationwide.  The recall applies to specific lots/packages/sizes and does not impact all El Guapo and Chile Pasilla-Ancho products.  See table below for specific product information.

No reports of illness or allergic reaction has been reported in connection with this recall.

RXBAR Recalls Bars Due to Undeclared Allergen

RXBar issued a recall on January 15, 2019 for certain varieties of bars due to the undeclared allergen, peanuts.  Those with an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts risk serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if product is consumed.

The problem was discovered in December where RXBAR identified the potential for peanut in two varieties of their bars – Chocolate Sea Salt and Coconut Chocolate.  The recall was expanded to additional varieties after receiving consumer contacts regarding additional allergic reactions.  Additional investigation indicated that an ingredient supplied by a third party contained the undeclared allergen. The supplier was immediately changed.  Affected varieties include:

  • RXBAR – Apple Cinnamon, Blueberry, Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Hazelnut, Chocolate Sea Salt, Coconut Chocolate, Coffee Chocolate, Mango Pineapple, Maple Sea Salt, Mint Chocolate, Mixed Berry, and Pumpkin Spice
  • RXBAR Kids – Apple Cinnamon Raisin, Berry Blast, Chocolate Chip

Those with peanut allergies should discard the recalled product and contact their local retailer or RXBAR for replacement or refund.

The recall was initiated after a labeling issue was discovered.  Product produced on December 13, 2018 may have been packaged incorrectly with the Pimento Cheese label on the top lid, but a Chicken Salad label on the container where milk is not indicated on the ingredient label.

Limited quantities of Mrs. Grissom’s SELECT Old Fashioned Pimento Cheese were packaged into cups labeled Mrs. Grissom’s SELECT Cranberry Pecan Chicken Salad.  See table below for specific product information.

The recall was initiated after an investigation determined that a printing error occurred on the specific lot recalled.  The Nutrition Facts Panel, Ingredient Declaration, and Allergen Statement on the back label of the package was incorrect for that lot.
