Check your freezers for dino nuggets from Walmart. This popular children’s food may be contaminated with a dangerous metal.

Lead!

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) this information comes to consumers as a “public health alert” instead of a “recall” because “the products are no longer available for purchase.” However, bags of affected dino nuggets may still be in consumer freezers.

What products are impacted? Why is lead a serious contamination concern? What should you do if you believe someone in your household has become sick? If you have affected product, what should you do with it?

Here’s what we know so far about the recall involving dino nuggets from Walmart!

USDA Announces Public Health Alert for Dino Nuggets from Walmart

On August 1, 2026, the USDA published a public health alert for a select lot code of dino nuggets from Walmart.

The press release indicates a single production date and lot for the affected products. These nuggets were produced on February 10, 2026.

Best If Used By: FEB 10 2027

These 29 ounce packages bear the establishment number P44164 (located on the back of the bag). Approximately 36 of these cute chicken cutouts are in each bag, which could lead to them being in consumer freezers for an extended period of time.

These products “may be contaminated with unsafe levels of lead.”

Affected products were shipped to Walmart location nationwide.

How Was Lead Discovered in Dino Nuggets from Walmart

This public health alert was issued by USDA. But how so the problem discovered?

It turns out, an undeclared “state partner” discovered the elevated lead levels during routine surveillance sampling. The specific state partner was not disclosed.

Why Is Lead Considered a Serious Concern?

Lead and other metal exposures are not good for anyone of any age. However, it is even more of an issue for pregnant women, infants and young children.

This is because lead can impact the developing brains and nervous systems of the youngest members of our populations.

There is no established “safe level” of lead for food. But the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has to have some type of measurement to compare tests to. So, they established an interim reference level (IRL) of 2.2 micrograms as a limit.

According to the press release, “the amount of lead in these nuggets could be as much as five times higher than this IRL for children.”

Symptoms of Lead Poisoning

Unfortunately, health effects associated with consuming food contaminated with lead can be long-term and pose no obvious immediate symptoms. In some cases, the only way a family discovers lead exposure is during routine childhood screenings.

If symptoms do occur, they may appear as:

  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain/colic
  • Vomiting
  • Anemia

Long-term exposure to elevated lead concentrations may result in:

  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches or muscle prickling/burning
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tremors
  • Weight loss

Children tend to experience more severe effects to lead exposure because their smaller body sizes and rapid metabolism and growth incorporates more lead into their developing bodies.

High levels of exposure to lead in early childhood, infancy, or even in utero can lead to neurological effects. Studies have shown learning disabilities, behavior problems, and reduced IQ in cases of early childhood lead exposure.

You Purchased Dino Nuggets from Walmart. What Should You Do?

If you or a family member may have been exposed to lead in dino nuggets from Walmart, you may have questions.

This depends on whether or not you have consumed the product.

Purchased But Have Not Consumed

If you have purchased affected dino nuggets from Walmart, but the product has not been opened, you may return it to the place of purchase or throw it away. Do so as quickly as possible to ensure that potentially contaminated food is not consumed.

Consumed But Have No Symptoms

Many times, initial symptoms are not obvious. Do not take this exposure lightly.

Seek medical attention immediately. Explain to your healthcare provider that you or your family member may have been exposed to lead. Appropriate diagnostic tests may be performed to determine the concentration of lead in your blood and assess the potential risks associated with that result.

Retain but segregate packaging. If you believe the dino nuggets in your home may contain lead, retaining the packaging can help investigators narrow or broaden the scope of the investigation. Carefully segregate the package, perhaps in a marked Ziploc bag, so that no one else in the household can use the product.
