NOW Health Group Inc. Recalls Select Now Real Food Zesty Sprouting Mix Due to Possible Health Risk

NOW Health Group, Inc of Bloomingdale, Illinois issued a recall on June 21, 2018 for select NOW Real Food Zesty Sprouting Mix due to potential contamination with the health hazard Salmonella.  While Salmonella may only cause mild symptoms in normally healthy individuals such as fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, others may experience more severe complications.  The very young, the very old, and those with a compromised immune system are at higher risk for severe symptoms and complications.  While rare, the infection may leave the gastrointestinal tract and enter the blood stream or other parts of the body resulting in arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.

The recall was initiated because Crimson Clover Seed, which are the primary ingredient in NOW Real Food Zesty Sprouting Mix may be contaminated with Salmonella.   Ongoing FDA and CDC investigations have implicated the clover seed sprouts in the recent multistate Salmonella outbreak.

This recall affects about 10,000 units sold online and in retail stores since December of 2017. See lot information in chart below for specific product recall information.  No other products are affected by the recall.

NOW Real Foods has notified retailers of the recall, but consumers who still have product at their homes are encouraged to not consume it and return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund.  A receipt is not necessary for a refund.

Nectar Foods Inc DBA Honey Mama’s Recalls Oregon Peppermint Cacao Nectar Bar Due to Undeclared Allergen

Nectar Foods Inc., DBA Honey Mama’s of Portland, Oregon issued a recall on June 22, 2018 for 79 sleeves of Oregon Peppermint bars due to the undeclared allergen, almonds.  People who have a severe sensitivity or allergy to almonds risk serious or life threatening allergic reaction.

Affected product was distributed to Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin as well as online at HoneyMamas.com between June 1, 2018 and June 21, 2018.

The product can be identified as packaged in a brown freezer paper measuring 3X3 inches and 8mm thick.  The label indicates the Oregon Peppermint flavor and is blue with white script and a dark blue hummingbird featuring the Honey Mama’s logo. The bars could be refrigerated or frozen.

See chart below for specific lot information.  No illness or injury has been reported in connection with this recall.

This recall was initiated after discovery that the product contains almonds, but doe not indicated the presence of almonds.  Consumers are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or destroy the product.

Land O’Frost Inc. Recalls Ham Due to Misbranding

Land O’Frost, Inc. of Madisonville, Kentucky issued a recall for about 4,944 pounds of ham products due to mislabeling.  According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the front of the package was correctly labeled as Black Forest Ham, but the back of the packaging is labeled as Honey Smoked Turkey Breast.

The affected product was produced on April 27, 2018 and bears and establishment number Est. 500K.  The product was shipped to retail locations in Arizona, California, Oregon, Texas, and Washington.  See chart below for specific product information.

The recall was initiated after a consumer complaint was issued about the product.  No illness or injury has been reported in connection with this recall.  Retailers were advised to be sure the product is no longer available to consumers.

People’s Sausage Co. Recalls Jerky and Meat Stick Products Due to Lack of Inspection

People’s Sausage Co. of Los Angeles, California issued a recall on June 25, 2018 for about 13,554 pounds of jerky and meat stick products because they were not produced with the benefit of FSIS inspection.

Affected products were produced from May 3, 2016 through June 15, 2018 and bear establishment number EST. 4160.  These products were shipped to retail locations in Montana.  See chart below for specific product information.

There have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury.  Anyone concerned about illness or reaction should contact their healthcare provider.  Consumers who have purchased the product are urged to no consume them and to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

Aunt Kitty’s Foods Inc Recalls Canned Chicken Products Due to Potential Underprocessing

Aunt Kitty’s Foods, Inc of Vineland, New Jersey issued a recall on June 26, 2018 for about 10,805 pounds of canned chicken gravy products due to a possible processing deviation that may have resulted in underprocessing of the product.

The canned chicken gravy was produced on April 4, 2018 and was shipped to retail locations in New Jersey and New York.  See chart below for specific product information.

The issue was discovered at the company’s labeling step where multiple cans were bulging.  FSIS was notified on June 21, 2018.

No reports of illness or injury have been made in connection with this outbreak. Anyone concerned about illness or injury should contact their healthcare provider.  Those who have purchased the products are urged to not consume them and to throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
